Metallica’s idea for making their summer tour different from past tours is to play their self-titled record (the Black Album) in its entirety. While many might argue this is a great idea, I disagree.

I like Metallica, but I am not an avid fan. If I were going to buy tickets to see them again, it wouldn’t be to hear them play that entire record, or any of their records in their entirety. I want to hear the hits. I don’t want to sit through a bunch of album cuts that they’ve never really played live before.

And it isn’t just because it is Metallica. Weezer did this recently with both the Blue Album and Pinkerton and I thought that was a bad idea too.

I guess I should phrase my argument like this; if you are a huge fan of the band, it would be great to see. If you are a middle-of-the-road or fringe fan, you are probably not going to go to that show. There just won’t be enough material you want to hear to make you buy tickets. And let not kid ourselves, selling tickets and making money is the name of the game.

Am I totally off-base with this? Is there something I’m missing? Let me know what you think. Drop me an email. My address is on the left side of this page.

Oh, and just in case you can’t make it to Europe or New Jersey to see Metallica this summer, here is their entire show from Prague. Enjoy…
