On Wednesday night, Linkin Park played a show in Cape Town, South Africa. Before the show, tragedy stuck when a scaffolding holding a billboard collapsed killing one and injuring nineteen.
The band was not told about this event until after they had performed, at which time they had this to say:
“Following our performance tonight at Cape Town Stadium, we were advised that several people were injured as a result of the collapse of an advertising tower erected by Lucozade in the parking area outside the venue.
We wish to express our deep sadness and concern for those injured and our heartfelt condolences to the family of the fan who died as a result of her injuries.
Though we have had no relationship with the sponsor or the entity responsible for erecting the structure, we take the safety of our fans very seriously and our thoughts are with all of those who were affected by this tragedy."
I commend them for making that statement. You can tell they really care about their fans and people in general. Not just from that statement, but from all of the work they do through their Music For Relief charity as well.
Who I don’t commend are the people that continued the show after that happened. How did they think that was a good diea?
Check out some video from that night and you can see the conditions outside…
Does this remind you of anything? Indy a couple summers ago, maybe.
They say news travels fast, but I guess the news of people being killed before a concert in Indy due to a stage collapse caused by wind didn’t travel fast enough to South Africa.
It’s unfortunate too. Someone lost their life because of it. Nineteen people were injured because of it.
It’s sad.
